Variscite Extends its Collaboration with QNX to Enhance Mission Critical Applications

Premier RTOS Solution Engineered for Building Reliable Embedded Systems

Variscite, a leading worldwide System on Module (SoM) designer, developer, and manufacturer, today announced the availability of the QNX® Operating System (OS) 8.0 across its i.MX 8M Plus modules. This addition provides customers with a secure OS for highly reliable embedded systems that require long-term function, precise timing, and uncompromised performance.

QNX is widely used in mission-critical embedded systems in the industrial IoT, health/medical, and the aerospace and defense sectors. The company’s commercial-grade, microkernel-based real-time operating system (RTOS) is highly suitable for secure, robust devices that require a comprehensive hardware-software foundation. QNX provides commercial support and maintenance, allowing developers to focus on innovation rather than OS management.

“It’s great to have QNX support across Variscite’s range of innovative SoMs,” said Grant Courville, SVP Products and Strategy, QNX. “This underscores our commitment to delivering robust, real-time operating systems and foundational software components to enable performance, security, safety and reliability. By leveraging QNX’s modular architecture and real-time capabilities, Variscite will be able to offer cutting-edge integrated solutions tailored to the needs of various mission-critical industries.”

Key benefits of QNX on Variscite SoMs include:
• Enhanced security mechanisms designed for industries with strict compliance requirements.
• QNX meets IEC 62304 software standards, among other safety certifications, complementing Variscite’s broad range of hardware certifications, such as ISO 13485.
• Access to professional software support from QNX.
• Regular updates and lifecycle commitments by QNX, in line with Variscite’s hardware longevity commitment.

“We are pleased to expand our ecosystem with QNX’s RTOS solution, providing our customers with additional OS support to suit their project needs,” said Ofer Austerlitz, VP of Business Development and Sales at Variscite. “As embedded systems become increasingly complex, requiring advanced hardware capabilities while adhering to strict regulations, QNX offers a complementary solution that aligns with Variscite’s commitment to compliance and long-term support.”

Variscite’s extensive product portfolio includes two highly scalable pin-compatible SoM families – VAR-SOM and DART – which offer significant advantages for product development and lifecycle management. This Pin2Pin compatibility allows customers to easily migrate between different performance levels without redesigning their carrier boards, enabling seamless upgrades or downgrades as project requirements evolve.

QNX is now available for i.MX8M-PLUS and i.MX8 SoMs, with plans to extend compatibility to additional SoM series, such as the i.MX9 – addressing a wider range of application requirements and end-product specifications.
