Renishaw strengthens its machine tool probing portfolio with two new innovative solutions

Renishaw, the global engineering technologies company, has expanded its machine tool probing range with two new products that help manufacturers bring more inspection processes directly onto the machine tool: RMP400S, an all-in-one spindle probe for smart manufacturing, and RUP60, an ultrasonic thickness measurement probe. Both products increase in-process inspection capability, reducing reliance on separate inspection equipment and supporting smarter, data-driven manufacturing.

The RMP400S is Renishaw’s most versatile spindle probe to date, combining touch-trigger, scanning, and surface finish verification in a single device. Built on patented RENGAGE™ strain gauge technology, it can achieve a repeatability of 0.25 μm 2 σ and surface finish Ra of 0.5 μm.

“High-density scanning provides users with comprehensive data for enhanced traceability and reliability in manufacturing,” said Justin Walford, Principal Product Marketing Engineer for Renishaw’s Machine Tool Products Division. “This includes run-out, form, flatness, roughness and waviness measurements, providing a more complete picture of workpiece quality.”

Surface finish verification is fully integrated into the probe’s scanning capability, giving manufacturers visibility of part finish and helping to flag potential issues before they escalate. For certain applications, such as bore and boss machining, a single RMP400S probe and stylus combination can carry out touch-trigger, scanning and surface verification tasks that would previously have required multiple tools.

The RMP400S enhances on-machine measurement capabilities by delivering high-density scanning data for improved in-process control, helping manufacturers streamline inspection workflows.

The RUP60 is Renishaw’s first on-machine ultrasonic thickness measurement probe, designed to simplify inspection of parts where access is limited to a single side, a common challenge in aerospace component manufacturing. It enables automated thickness measurement without removing the workpiece from the machine, reducing operator involvement and requiring no specialist training.

Traditional manual thickness measurement of large metal workpieces is slow, consumes valuable factory floor space and is vulnerable to operator error such as poor positioning or inadequate coupling. The RUP60 addresses this with automated measurement of metal thicknesses between 0.7 mm and 30 mm using a single stylus, and it operates reliably with or without coupling fluid, even in harsh production environments.

The RUP60 supports adaptive machining approaches such as cut-measure-cut by reducing user error and delivering precise, repeatable results. Measurements take just two seconds per point, with accuracy better than 10 μm and repeatability of 2 μm. Because the workpiece never leaves the machine, the RUP60 reduces production steps while saving time, floor space and cost.

Both the RUP60 and RMP400S communicate with the machine tool controller via Renishaw’s new RMM-QE radio receiver, building on the established QE radio transmission protocol. A new Universal Sensor Interface (USI) has also been developed to support the RUP60 and other Renishaw QE probes, along with the data-intensive processing they require.

“Ultrasonic thickness measurement is a readily accepted technique, now innovatively adapted to the machining environment, allowing fast, highly accurate and repeatable measurement,” commented Heather Ormston, Lead Product Marketing Engineer for Renishaw’s Machine Tool Products Division.

Both the RMP400S and the RUP60 are supported by Renishaw’s established Inspection Plus software. They are also compatible with Renishaw’s Set and Inspect software for intuitive, code-free programming, as well as Renishaw Central, the company’s smart manufacturing data platform. This software ecosystem enables manufacturers to integrate either probe seamlessly into existing workflows, reporting systems and quality control processes.
