ASTM International Forms Artificial Intelligence Committee for Manufacturing

The focus will be on frameworks, best practices, and standards for the usage of AI technologies

ASTM International’s board of directors recently approved the creation of a new technical committee on artificial intelligence (AI) in manufacturing systems.

The new committee (F50) will focus on frameworks, best practices, and standards for AI technologies in manufacturing.

Industrial AI is advancing faster than the infrastructure and standards required to deploy it. Standards will enable interoperability and scalable opportunities for the integration of AI in manufacturing systems. ASTM International is strategically equipped to close these gaps as a neutral, consensus-driven home for practical, sector‑specific standards.

“Artificial intelligence is transforming manufacturing globally,” says Jay Lee, Ph.D., Clark Distinguished Professor and director of industrial AI center, University of Maryland, College Park. “Establishing trusted standards through ASTM will be essential to ensure that AI-driven manufacturing systems are reliable, interoperable, and scalable across industries. Our goal is to bring together industry, academia, and government to establish practical and globally relevant standards for AI-enabled manufacturing.”

The committee will convene stakeholders from across the manufacturing industry to advance work in the following areas:

  • Establishing clear definitions and classifications for AI concepts, applications, and methods as they pertain to manufacturing
  • Developing standards for how manufacturing data is collected, handled, shared, and protected
  • Guiding integration of AI systems with factory equipment and software to enable interoperability at scale “The establishment of ASTM’s new artificial intelligence in manufacturing systems committee marks a pivotal step forward for the industry,” said Andy Kireta, ASTM president. “ASTM standards, developed through our robust consensus-driven process can help drive innovation, enhance quality, and empower safety in AI-driven manufacturing systems.”

The inaugural meeting of the committee will take place June 3-4, 2026 during ASTM’s committee week at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas, Texas. The event will consist of a full day knowledge sharing event followed by a day of facilitated standards development work sessions. To attend, visit na.eventscloud.com/website/86868/

The ASTM standards development process is open to anyone with an interest; to join the new committee and participate, please visit go.astm.org/join.

The work of the committee will support U.N. Sustainable Development Goal #9 on industries, innovation, and infrastructure.
