WEG introduces WG50 Cooling Tower gearbox

The power of the WG50, now engineered for cooling towers

WEG, the global leader in electric motors and gearboxes, has expanded its renowned WG50 product line with the launch of the WG50 Cooling Tower gearbox. Designed specifically for the demanding requirements of industrial cooling towers, the new gearbox delivers exceptional durability, heat dissipation and operational reliability, setting a new benchmark for performance in cooling applications.

The WG50 Cooling Tower is the result of meticulous engineering, combining WEG’s extensive motion expertise with advanced design methodologies. Leveraging Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, the gearbox ensures efficient oil circulation, improved thermal regulation and increased endurance under continuous operation. These enhancements enable high thermal capacity even in the harshest operating environments, contributing to maximised equipment lifespan.

Engineered to withstand the unique challenges of cooling tower environments, the WG50 Cooling Tower incorporates several critical design improvements. A double seal system protects internal components from moisture and contaminants, while a specialised protective coating provides superior resistance to corrosion. A moisture-resistant filter further enhances the gearbox’s longevity — enabling service life up to four times longer than conventional alternatives and ensuring steady, reliable performance.

“With the WG50 Cooling Tower, WEG continues to advance its commitment to innovation, reliability and customer-focused engineering,” said Marek Lukaszczyk, UK and Middle East Marketing Manager. “This solution delivers the durability and performance that today’s industrial cooling applications demand, while offering the robustness and efficiency users expect from the WG50 line.”

Built in compliance with AGMA 6013 standards for cooling tower gearboxes, the WG50 Cooling Tower offers robust construction and operational integrity. The gearbox features a cast iron housing and helical gears, with shaft arrangements available in both parallel and right-angle configurations to suit a variety of tower designs.

Supporting nominal torque values ranging from 7.5 to 92 kNm and gear ratios between 6.3 and 22.48, the WG50 Cooling Tower provides the versatility required for a wide spectrum of cooling applications. Its mounting options — including housing and flange configurations — allow straightforward installation, while output shafts are offered in solid or hollow keyed solid versions to ensure compatibility with diverse system requirements.

This modular, adaptable design allows for extensive customisation, ensuring seamless integration into new or existing cooling tower systems. Such flexibility makes it an ideal solution for industries where continuous cooling performance is essential, including power generation, HVAC, chemical processing and heavy industrial operations.
