WEG’s Climate Targets Validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)

WEG, a global leader in high-efficiency industrial solutions, has achieved a major sustainability milestone with the validation of its climate targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). As a global benchmark for ambitious, science-based climate action, this recognition confirms WEG’s commitment to combatting climate change while driving innovation and sustainable growth worldwide.

SBTi is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The initiative defines and promotes best practices in science-based target development, independently evaluates companies’ targets and enables organisations worldwide to play a meaningful role in combating climate change.

Guided by these international standards, WEG launched the WEG Carbon Neutral Program in 2022 to measure and improve its performance against global climate challenges. As part of this effort, WEG committed to reduce operational greenhouse gas emissions by 52 percent by 2030, taking 2021 as the baseline. It also aims to achieve carbon neutrality (Net-Zero) by 2050.

The SBTi validation confirms WEG’s short-term climate targets, covering both direct operational emissions (Scope 1 and 2) and value chain emissions (Scope 3), which are evaluated as an economic intensity target in relation to financial performance. This approach ensures that WEG’s sustainable growth is both responsible and measurable, setting a benchmark for environmental accountability in the industrial sector.

“The approval of the emission reduction targets by the SBTi is a decisive step in WEG’s climate journey, reinforcing our commitment to building a sustainable future,” said Daniel Godinho, director of sustainability and institutional relations at WEG. “Aligning our goals with international technical criteria demonstrates transparency and credibility with stakeholders.”

To achieve these ambitious goals, WEG has structured robust governance in alignment with international guidelines, including the Paris Agreement and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of the countries where it operates. The company has adopted methodologies such as the Marginal Cost Abatement Curve (MACC) and Return on Investment (ROI) to prioritise emission reduction projects. These projects target key areas of the energy transition, including energy efficiency, operational efficiency, renewable energy and electric mobility.

With operations in more than 120 countries, WEG’s validated climate targets reinforce its position as a global leader in sustainability, socio-environmental responsibility and technological innovation. The approval demonstrates the company’s commitment to transparency, accountability and measurable impact, while highlighting its role in the global energy transition through innovative solutions and responsible operations.
